The Active Wellbeing Society has teamed up with the hugely popular Warehouse Café in Digbeth to offer a programme of activities throughout the summer and beyond. Sustainability Sundays will have a different theme each month, from sharing, to soil, to growing your own food, and will be open to all. We’ll be looking at how to make the city, and our own lives, more sustainable, and learning how to do this whatever the budget available. The event will run from midday until 4pm and while the street is closed there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Each event will have talks, activities and information, as well as food provided by our community outreach team. We’re working with groups from across the organisation to provide all sorts of sustainable things to do. Every month there will be a street closure, advice on growing and much more. Our chefs will be on site making delicious meals from surplus food, so the lunch is sustainable too. There’s also going to be an opportunity to take part in led bike rides – with bikes available to borrow (12:30-1:30pm). If yours isn’t quite road worthy then Cycle Fix It is on hand (12-2pm) to carry out repairs – and if it’s past even that – we’ll be taking in old bikes to recycle and pass on.
The first event’s on the 14th of May working with Compost Culture Birmingham and focussing on soil. Participants can learn more about “Black Gold”, how to make their own, and see how to build a wormery. There’s also plans for talks and information sessions on soil and regenerative agriculture, permaculture and the importance of promoting and protecting biodiversity. The list of events is still growing, and we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to be involved.
The programme has been put together by Laura Hackett, one of the Active Wellbeing Society’s Grow and Connect coordinators, she says: “It feels really exciting to be working with The Warehouse Café to create an event that brings together the work TAWS does, in collaboration with the wider community of climate campaigners and activists.”
