The Active Wellbeing Society and women’s charity WE:ARE will be joining the One Billion Rising Movement once again, with a flash mob in Birmingham City Centre. This year’s event is at 1pm on the 14th of February on the section of the High Street between Union Street and New Street.
One Billion Rising is believed to be the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, and began as a call to action based on the UN statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during their lifetime. With the world population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.
The 2023 Birmingham flash mob brought together communities, organisations, and individuals all through the joy of movement and dance so we can’t wait to do it again, with even more people. Come and join us on the 14th of February to rise for peace, compassion, kindness, connection, community and care.
The choreography’s online for those who’d like to check it out in advance. We’re also running rehearsals at Hay Hall in Tyseley on the 10th of February from 2pm, and everyone is welcome. However – you don’t need to follow the Break the Chain dance routine – you’re more than welcome to come on the day and move as you see fit! All genders, ages, abilities and folks of all backgrounds are welcome to join us. Make the dance your own, in your own way, to your own ability and comfort level.
We’d ask that you come dressed ready to move and in footwear that will be safe to dance in as the ground may be uneven. Consider bringing layers if it’s cold, and keep an eye on our social media channels in case there is adverse weather, we make changes, or cancel the event. You may wish you bring a drink of water with you.
