Yasin’s story

A journey of growth and transformation through Project Brum

As I enter Year 12, my academic focus is on mathematics, physics, and computer science—three subjects that deeply resonate with my aspiration to pursue a career in the field of computer science. My passion for technology and problem-solving initially led me to apply for an IT course, but life had different plans. And instead, I was placed in a community work program. While this wasn’t the path I had anticipated, it turned out to be a transformative experience that has significantly shaped my personal growth and broadened my skillset in ways I hadn’t imagined.

“Trying new things is something all humans should do. We need to try new things to grow as a person and expand our skillsets”

Experiences at Project Brum

Snowboarding was one of my first challenges, requiring perseverance, patience, and a willingness to embrace failure as a learning tool. It didn’t come naturally, but pushing through frustration taught me the importance of persistence—a trait vital in both life and computer science, where overcoming setbacks is key to success.

Learning carpentry further honed my skills, as I enjoyed creating tangible products from raw materials. This experience reinforced the satisfaction of building something from scratch, similar to programming.

Completing a first aid course added a crucial skill to my repertoire, instilling responsibility and preparedness. First aid, much like problem-solving in computer science, demands calmness under pressure and quick decision-making—qualities that are essential in both emergency situations and technical challenges.

“One thing I will take away is the achievement, I felt really proud at the award ceremony. “

What I took away

Beyond the practical skills I acquired, one of the most profound changes was in my social skills. Before this experience, I struggled with social interactions and found it difficult to connect with others. However, the community work required constant communication and collaboration with a diverse group. Over time, I significantly improved my ability to engage, share ideas, and work in a team. I made lasting friendships and gained confidence, which will benefit me in any field, including computer science.
