At 75 years old, Colin is a devoted father and grandfather, as well as a full-time guardian to one of his granddaughters. He discovered TAWS’ Community Café www.theaws.co.uk/big-feed/ at the Spearhead Trust through received hot takeaway meals during the Covid lockdowns. When the café began to offer a sit-down option in October 2021, he was keen to give it a go, particularly because he loved chef Christine’s cooking!
Eight months on, Colin is now a staple member of the café and has become a regular volunteer for Laura, our Community Café Link Worker. Twice a week without fail, he helps to set up and close down the café, as well as being a friendly face to the regular visitors and any newcomers. He’s an enthusiastic participant to any activities that run alongside – whether it be chair-based exercise, a walking group around the local area of Druids Heath, or even a recent craft workshop.
“I’m always impressed by the professional running of the café, the positive and friendly atmosphere and the sparky staff! The café is like a second home now. I really enjoy myself and the staff are all 100% – I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone who helps or works there. They’re all out to do one thing and that’s help people in life.”
Colin feels that the café has changed every aspect of his life in some way – mentally, physically, socially. As well as offering camaraderie in tough times, Colin says listening and relating to other people’s stories has taught him “how people go in life” in difficult circumstances.
“I’ve volunteered at the café because people have been good to me when I’ve needed it, and now I’m putting back in what I can. When I see someone struggling I’d sooner help them than see them struggle. To those who might be questioning coming along to the café – just do it. Take it one step at a time, but give it a go!”
