Kickstart Scheme

We’re pleased to offer new and exciting opportunities under the Kickstart Scheme via DWP. All roles are for a period of six months, based in Birmingham, and covering 25 hours per week at a rate of £9.30PH (Real Living Wage). They are a great way to gain experience, skills and training to move forward in a new career.

These opportunities include Community Food Assistant, Community Programmes Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Cycling Assistant and Growing Assistant. Please find job descriptions below.

The Kickstart Scheme is open to those who meet the following criteria: 

1. You must be aged between 16-24 years old
2. Currently receiving Universal Credit
3. On no other DWP schemes currently

The roles are a great way for young people to develop both personally, and professionally- whilst helping communities most in need. 

Successful applicants will receive:

  • National Living Wage for 25 hour p/week for six months
  • A comprehensive induction
  • Monthly 1:1s
  • Guidance and support from a dedicated youth mentor
  • Regular workshops
  • The chance to develop and deliver a social action project, alongside other young people

Job descriptions:

Community Food Assistants – We are looking for individuals to support with food preparation and cooking at any of our local community cafes in the city. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has experience in the hospitality industry or customer service. You will be preparing food, serving members of the community, and supporting the cooking lead with the preparation of delicious meals. All ingredients are donated or use surplus food saved from going to waste. This role is for anyone looking to be in the middle of it all and wanting to create positive change in communities.

Community Programmes Assistants – Successful applicants will be working across any number of community projects. This can include Wear and Share – sorting and preparation of donated clothing and arranging delivery of these items to the most vulnerable people in our local communities. Alternatively, they may wish to work with our Share Shacks team – where people in the community can borrow items for free of charge. Items include DIY tools, games, and cooking equipment- anything from lawnmowers to sewing machines! This is the perfect opportunity for anyone with community volunteer experience and wanting to develop outstanding customer service skills.

Administrative Assistants – Work across the projects supporting the organisation with administrative tasks related to day-to-day operations. Any admin experience would be hugely beneficial but we can supply some training to support including to use Word, Excel and Outlook effectively. Admin tasks could vary from applying for street closure applications, booking meetings, or supporting applications for new funding bids in the data and insight teams.

Cycling Assistants –  Will work closely with our Active Travel team and our Cycle Mechanic. No cycling experience needed, but you will need to be friendly and comfortable working with children in schools across the city. You will work alongside the Cycle Mechanic to fix bike issues for members of the community at our cycle fix-it cafes. You may also help our Bikeability teams which teach children and adults to learn to ride a bike, or with our bike loan initiative- to give people free access to the bright orange bikes you may have seen around Birmingham.
