Handsworth Wood Youth Group have been delivering food parcels and hot meals to key workers and vulnerable people within the community. They also provide a shopping service for people who are unable to get to the shop. Over the last three weeks their growing team of dedicated volunteers have helped over 60 families. The group covers Handsworth Wood and have also made deliveries in Longbridge, Handsworth, Yardley and Walsall.
Handsworth Wood Youth Group have been working in partnership with Masjid Aisha, Elmwood Church and As-Suffa, as well as the wider BrumTogether food distribution network to supply food parcels to those who need it. They have received food and money donations from the local community and also distribute food parcels provided by Birmingham City Council and the citywide Donated Food Theme Group, which distributes ‘donated and paid for food’ to food banks and food outreach organisations.
Jamshed Mohammed, the leader of the Youth Group, explained that he realised there was a need for food support within the community and decided to get a group of volunteers to offer help. The group can deliver food parcels or provide a shopping service for people who need help with getting food supplies. People who are self-isolating can provide Jamshed with a list of items and he will organise for food to be bought and delivered in exchange for the cost of the items.
Handsworth Wood Youth Group have also been supporting key workers at local care home, Morning Stars, who have been working hard to look after elderly and vulnerable members of the community. In partnership with Ummah Welfare Trust and Masjid Aisha, the group have delivered PPE and food supplies, including samosas and chicken biriyani, to the care workers and residents. Jamshed explained that he wanted to boost morale, believing that ‘it’s important to serve our local community and make a difference’.
Jamshed has praised the community spirit and generosity in Birmingham. By building networks and providing support, he believes that the group have built community trust. One lady donated £100 to enable the provision of vital supplies. Handsworth Wood Youth Group have also received guidance and support from As-Suffa who have advised the group on planning and coordinating food distribution. This partnership has allowed both groups to share and manage supplies to ensure that food reaches those who need it.
