The team behind Uttlesford Mobile Community Supermarket were delighted to welcome Chris Vince MP to join them in Hatfield Heath, on Friday 25 July.
The Supermarket, run by The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS), in partnership with Uttlesford Community Action Network (UCAN), is open to everyone. It is especially useful for those looking to stretch their budget, selling a range of standard staples at discounted prices. There is regularly a small selection of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread for free. Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Uttlesford District Council and Essex County Council, the Supermarket is already making a difference for the households who have signed up for free membership.
One of 14 community supermarkets across Essex, this one is different because it’s ‘mobile’. The well-stocked van follows a fortnightly route of 8 stops, including: Hatfield Heath, White Roding, Flitch Green, Little Hallingbury, South Dunmow, Takeley, Elsenham and Thaxted.
Marie-Ann Capps, Community Connector for TAWS says, “We are building a strong following across our 8 stops. It’s tough out there – bills for many households have increased, and our cost-effective pricing helps keep pounds in pockets. It’s also about community and connection – a chance for people to meet others and have a friendly chat. You can’t put a price on that!”
Clive Emmett, CEO of partner organisation UCAN explains, “Our District is very rural so it’s important to create opportunities for people to come together. This project is doing that already, both through the members who shop with us and the volunteers who help keep it all moving.”
Chris Vince MP praised the team behind the project, “I’m especially impressed by the scale of the Mobile Supermarket and how the team are working with Parish Councils, village halls, community groups and local schools. It’s a very positive and uplifting project, working at grass-roots to make a difference. I’m sure it will continue to grow.”
