PROJECT BRUM

Empowering Young People with Enriching Opportunities

What is Project Brum:

Each summer since it started in 2017, The Active Wellbeing Society welcomes a new cohort of passionate and enthusiastic individuals aged 16-24, eager to inspire change in the community. They can choose to gain paid experience in one of the many sectors within the organisation, including Active StreetsBig Feed,  Funding, Gardening, Data, Bikes, Systems, Share Shack, or Marketing.

Why You Should Join:

Team members become your mentors from day one, encouraging you and providing you with the support you need to grow. You will be involved in many tasks, and no two days are the same! Alongside this, you will receive individual training from your team to ensure you are able to complete all tasks. Additionally, to further upskill you and better prepare you for the world of work, you will attend employability sessions to provide you with new found confidence in your understanding of essential practices.

How To Get Involved:

Applications for this invaluable opportunity open for summer each year, so it is a good idea to check in around May/June. However, there are many volunteering opportunities you can involve yourself in across the organisation, in preparation for this role. You can find out more here.

95% would recommend the employability sessions to interns

85% said that the role had a positive impact on their wellbeing

79% said their physical activity increased as a result of their role

There were more than 500 applicants for 2023

Here's what some of 2023's Project Brum staff had to say about their experience:

‘We loved connecting with new people and making notable changes to outdoor space, and also seeing the impact those changes had on them’

Kesh, Bikes

‘Working at the Shareshack has been a wonderful experience, and all of the people that I have interacted with – whether it be staff or the public – have treated me with respect.’

Pyper, Share shack

‘I have had to push myself out of my comfort zone, talk to new people of different ages, and it’s made me a lot more confident. Before, I wouldn’t want to talk to strangers because I was worried about what they might think or say, but now I can talk to anyone about anything!’

XENA, ACTIVE STREETS

‘We loved connecting with new people and making notable changes to outdoor space and also seeing the impact those changes had on them’

Emily and Abigail, Grow & Connect

‘It’s been a good experience,

and I can take this back

to Uni now and show

everyone what I have learnt’

Lucy, Marketing

‘I volunteered here before I got offered the job, and it was really rewarding to do’

Milo, Big Feed
