HFE and The Active Wellbeing Society working together to make exercise inclusive for everyone

HFE are the UK’s leading provider of personal training courses and a wide range of fitness qualifications including sports massage, GP referral, Pilates and yoga. This year, they have launched a new programme, the much-requested Level 3 Award in Programming and Supervising Exercise with Disabled Clients, or simply Level 3 Exercise for Disabled Clients. Recognised and supported by the fitness industry’s original awarding body, YMCA Awards, this qualification has the potential to positively impact countless numbers of lives.

HFE are proud to be one of the very few providers in the country who deliver this course and because of this, they’ve turned their attention to supporting The Active Wellbeing Society to upskill staff and serve a demographic that is currently greatly underrepresented. Recent reports suggest that 1 in 5 people in the UK has a disability, which equates to nearly 11 million people.

Unfortunately, only 18% of disabled adults undertake physical activity that lasts longer than 30 minutes a week, this is in stark comparison to the 38% of non-disabled adults who engage in physical activity.

More can clearly be done and that’s why HFE are now working closely with The Active Wellbeing Society to encourage further inclusivity. The Active Wellbeing Society’s mission is to support people to be healthier, happier and more connected within their communities, especially those from within our most deprived areas. This aligns perfectly with HFE’s ethos to raise exercise participation levels and standards across the UK.

Speaking more about the partnership, Manager Sue Mellor has this to say:

“The first staff member to benefit from this new initiative is Keith one of our Community Activators and he explained why he’s excited to start a new fitness journey and make a positive impact within the Birmingham community”

“Completing the course will complement the work I have done previously with various members of the community that have been under represented and perhaps not well accommodated in activity and wellbeing initiatives.  To have a recognised qualification gives us more power to make a difference”
