Have you tried growing:

Ginger makes a great pot plant for a kitchen windowsill โ€“ if there is a knobbly bit on it already, plant that bit pointing up. It canโ€™t go outdoors though as it needs to stay warm
Onions, sweet potatoes, potatoes all do well on a windowsill – you might have one sprouting in your veg already. Just cover in earth and keep watered.
Avocados, Chick Peas, Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin, squash, lemon, orange, tomato seeds and herb seeds or any other leftovers can do well. Golden rule is plant things as deep as they are big.  Avocado seeds will grow in water and make a great project to watch the roots growing, if you have a see-through plastic container.
For Gentle raindrop effect, try watering using your hand
