A National Highways team from national engineering contractor, VolkerLaser, has completed work on an outdoor space at The Omnia Practice (Yardley Green Medical Centre) in Birmingham as part of their commitment to the communities they work in.
The Active Wellbeing Society works alongside The Omnia Practice to deliver social prescribing projects. We reached out to VolkerLaser to help restore the space that had been previously used for our compost clubs, but had become overgrown and inaccessible. The team proposed the installation of a concrete footpath and landscaping works to the surrounding area to create a safe and welcoming space for the community.
The development of the space was completed in September, and, the team also added bird boxes, insect habitats, and donated flowers to brighten up the space.
Megan Smith, Head of Community Delivery and Development, said: “We are delighted to recognise the immeasurable donation of time and expertise from Volker, whose support has helped us transform an outdoor space into a welcoming environment where patients can come together, build connections, and improve their wellbeing.
“The new space has been carefully designed to provide more than just a physical area. It offers a supportive environment where people can reflect, connect with nature, and take part in activities that promote healthier, more active lifestyles.
“Thanks to Volker’s generosity and commitment, this project will leave a lasting legacy for patients and the wider community, providing a place where people feel welcome, supported, and inspired to take positive steps for their health.”
Project manager, Simon Dhillon, said: “Supporting the Active Wellbeing Society and helping bring their vision for the outdoor space to life has been a truly rewarding experience. I’m proud of the way my team and our supply chain have come together to make this happen. It’s fantastic to see the area transformed into a space where people can safely enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature.”
Michelle Smith, Community Delivery and Development Lead, said: “It’s been amazing working with Simon and the team at Volker Laser on this project. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and desire to support us in creating such a wondered space to support and promote patient and community health and wellbeing has been inspirational. I’m really excited to see the green space being used and the positive impact this will have on so many members of the local community.”
